Most people listen to music as an outlet to escape and get away from some of the issues they face, KC Slater and Shy the Duke are sure to take you to that special place.
“A lot of artists really pride themselves on making “struggle rap” and we pride ourselves on making “striving raps”. We want to encourage and uplift people and remind them they have the power to change and make a difference.”
KC Slater and Shy the Duke are a complete fusion of Electronica and Hip-Hop Soul; full of a lot of quirky, abstract kind of beats and Hip-Hop Soul from old-school 90’s samples and beat patterns.
The guys are currently gearing up to release their new project, Adderall RX, which is the second installment of their Adderall series, the first of which was released in 2015.
“The last Adderall release was a turning period in our lives where we stepped up our bars and songs and subject matter and we stopped paying for studio time and decided to spend the money on building our own studio and recording ourselves. So just like the first Adderall, we are at another turning point in our lives and Adderall RX shows that.”
The first single off of the project is called “Gunshots,” which discusses the harsh realities of a kid growing up in the inner-city. Even with such a strong subject matter, the song is formatted in such a way that you can’t help but to nod your head and vibe with the melody while also taking in the deeper message.
“We are not conscious rappers but we are conscious individuals, we discuss topics that don’t force our opinions on you but we discuss them in a way people can understand and relate.”
You can expect the full project to be out in the spring, but for now check out “Gunshots” on Soundcloud.
Hailing from Trenton, NJ, their environment played a critical role in their outlook on life and the music that they create.
“Our families supported us a great deal by wanting the best for us and teaching us that there is more to this world than just our surroundings. That being instilled in us affected our underlying message of just wanting more and going after what you want.”
In Trenton, the presence of a solid hip-hop community is almost non-existent. Overall the hip-hop community is two-sided; to the right is gansta trap/post-Max B era style, and to the left it’s extremely conscious and lyric-driven. KC and the Duke don’t fit with either side so they had to make a lane for themselves.
KC Slater and Shy the Duke always had music in their veins, but it wasn’t until high school that they began to recognize their true capabilities. They would rap and do a cyphers after football practice just for fun.
“We started passing around this notebook where we would write rhymes talking about each other. KC and Danny Boy (our engineer) would do it and then we added Shy and formed a rap group called “The Academy” which was a play off of our school name Trenton Catholic Academy.”
As the years went by they began investing more and more into their craft, and with Danny Boy attending Audio School in New York, they were able to transform one of the rooms at KC’s house into a recording studio. The long nights recording and rehearsing paid off, and the guys were able to land a few gigs at popular Philadelphia venue, Voltage Louge, where they performed with DJ Diamond Kutz and opened up for Joe Budden, Smoke Dza, and Mike Zombie.
Now known as KC Slater and Shy the Duke, the guys are on a 12-city college tour with Music Cafe, performing at schools all over New Jersey. After the EP comes out in the spring, KC and the Duke will have recurring gigs at McGuinns which is a local venue in Jersey.
